Choose a coherent geographical focus

UNESCO lists the Rainforests of the Atsinanana and the Andrefana Dry Forests as distinct natural properties. Their shared national location does not make them quick alternatives from the same base. Decide which environment matters most and obtain a realistic route with named overnight stops. Ask whether the proposal relies on road transfers, domestic flights or both, and what happens if a connection changes. Fewer regions can mean more meaningful time in each place.

Make room for Ambohimanga’s living significance

The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga is a separate cultural property with royal, burial and sacred spaces. UNESCO emphasizes its enduring spiritual role and connection with national identity. A visit should respect that character rather than treat the site only as a historic viewpoint. Ask about permitted routes, guiding and photography, and follow local instructions around sacred areas. If cultural history interests you, give it dedicated time rather than use it as an airport-day filler.

Set realistic wildlife and walking expectations

For any protected-area visit, confirm the particular park or trail, authorized guide, effort level and weather alternative. A broad rainforest label does not establish which habitats you will encounter or which animals you may see. Avoid operators promising guaranteed close contact or handling wildlife. Share mobility needs and expectations before the route is finalized. The conservation value of a landscape is a reason for careful visitor behaviour, not a reason to seek access beyond approved paths.

Build disruption into the itinerary

Ask who rearranges accommodation if a domestic leg changes, whether separate tickets are protected and how far in advance you must return to the international gateway. Compare the complete cost of transfers, guides, park access and extra nights instead of only hotel rates. Verify current official entry and health requirements before departure.
