Understand the medinas as living towns
UNESCO’s Medinas of the Historic Sultanates inscription describes six historic towns shaped by Indian Ocean exchange and distinctive social traditions. These are living urban places, not just collections of old buildings. Ask a local guide to explain the relationship between streets, religious spaces and community life, and seek permission before photographing residents. Respect dress and access expectations. A thoughtful walk needs time for interpretation rather than a checklist of façades.
Make the island choice explicit
The country’s heritage inventory distinguishes places on different islands, including Mohéli and Anjouan. Ask which island every proposed accommodation and activity occupies and how you will travel between them. Confirm the actual transport, luggage rules and contingency for disruption before making non-refundable bookings. Our recommendation is a focused first stay unless additional connections are firmly arranged. Do not assume a country-wide search result represents a property near your arrival airport.
Treat marine and volcanic outings separately
Mohéli’s marine park and Karthala appear in the tentative heritage inventory. Tentative status is not World Heritage inscription or a statement of current visitor access. A marine outing needs its own boat, permissions and safety arrangements; a volcanic-landscape walk needs a named route, guide and conditions assessment. Ask what causes an excursion to be cancelled and whether an alternative is included. Do not combine these distinct activities under an unqualified promise of easy adventure.
Plan for cultural respect and connection changes
Confirm arrival pickup, accommodation contacts and the way you will communicate if travel is delayed. Check current official entry, health and insurance requirements for your exact itinerary, especially when combining island jurisdictions or onward countries. Leave time before your international departure rather than making it depend on the last local connection.
