Kumasi is the spiritual and political heart of the Asante kingdom.

Home of the Asantehene, Manhyia Palace, the Akwasidae royal festival cycle, and Kejetia Market. In the surrounding villages of Bonwire and Ntonso, weavers and stampers still produce Ghana’s most recognizable hand-crafted textiles: kente and adinkra.

Sacred crocodiles, painted houses, and the craft traditions of Bolga.

Bolgatanga is known for hand-woven straw baskets and smock weaving. At Paga Crocodile Pond, crocodiles are treated as sacred members of the community. In Sirigu, women carry a multigenerational tradition of geometric earth-pigment painting across compound walls.

Western

A quiet, golden coast of surf, mangroves, and Ghana’s southern tip.

West of Cape Coast, Ghana slows down. Busua and Butre are surf-and-fishing villages where mornings begin gently. Nzulezu is built on stilts over Lake Amansuri and reached by canoe, while Cape Three Points marks mainland Ghana’s southernmost tip with a working lighthouse.

Eastern

Gardens, falls, and the immense water of Lake Volta near Accra.

The Akuapem hills cool into the 1890s-era Aburi Botanical Gardens less than two hours from Accra. The Volta River was dammed at Akosombo in 1965 to create Lake Volta. Farther north are Boti Falls, Umbrella Rock, and the road toward the lake’s quieter eastern shore.
