What Gola-Tiwai actually represents

The property includes Gola Rainforest National Park and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary within the Upper Guinean forest region. UNESCO emphasizes biodiversity and freshwater habitats, with species including the pygmy hippopotamus and forest elephant. Their presence in the ecosystem is not a sighting guarantee. Ask the responsible visitor team which trails or observation activities are available, what guiding is required and how your visit contributes to protection. Avoid operators who sell close contact with wild animals as a certainty.

Handle difficult history thoughtfully

Bunce Island and other historical places should be approached with attention to the people and events they represent. Ask for a guide who can provide context, explain what is documented and distinguish that from interpretation. For any island visit, confirm the departure point, boat arrangements and time ashore before paying.
