Understand what the heritage designation covers

UNESCO’s Omatí Minhô property protects coastal and marine ecosystems in the Bijagós archipelago. Mangroves, tidal flats and marine habitats are central to its significance. The designation is not a claim that every island has a visitor lodge or that every beach is open to tours. Decide whether your interest is bird observation, coastal ecology or community-hosted time, then ask for an itinerary designed around that interest and the actual access rules.

Plan island transport before rooms

Ask your proposed host for the exact arrival point, transfer vessel, sailing conditions, luggage limits and contingency if a crossing cannot operate. Establish who meets you and whether the transfer is exclusive or shared. Do not leave the last island return until immediately before an international flight. An additional mainland night may be a sensible buffer; compare its cost with the risk of a missed departure when deciding how many islands to include.

Keep wildlife expectations responsible

UNESCO identifies the archipelago as important for migratory shorebirds and marine wildlife, including turtles; Poilão is particularly significant for nesting. That is ecological context, not a promise of a sighting or permission to enter a nesting area. Ask about seasonal access, authorized guiding and photography rules. Avoid touching wildlife, buying animal products or accepting an excursion that requires disturbing animals. A provider should be willing to explain how the visit supports conservation and local custodians.

Respect island hosts and practical limits

Request consent before visiting a community or photographing residents. Ask which places or activities are private, sacred or unavailable to visitors, and agree fees in advance through a legitimate host. For a remote stay, confirm drinking water, communications, medical contingency and how you will settle extras. Check current entry and health requirements with appropriate official sources.
