Match your interest to an island

UNESCO’s country inventory identifies Cidade Velha on Santiago as an inscribed World Heritage site; it separately lists Fogo’s Chã das Caldeiras and landscapes on other islands as tentative entries. Those distinctions are useful for research, not proof that every island fits one trip. Our recommendation is to build around one main island and add another only after confirming how the connection works with your international flights.

Make time for Cidade Velha

Cidade Velha, formerly Ribeira Grande, lies in southern Santiago. UNESCO highlights surviving street patterns, churches, a fortress and Pillory Square within a colonial settlement tied to Atlantic history. A guided visit should explain that history, including exploitation and forced movement, rather than present the town as a decorative village. Ask which interiors are currently accessible and how much walking is involved. Leave time to understand the place rather than treating it as a quick photograph between transfers.

Do not assume inter-island connections

If your interests include Fogo or the Cova–Paul–Ribeira da Torre landscape, obtain the actual transport plan before reserving accommodation. Ask whether any flight or boat connection is on a protected ticket, who handles disruption, and how luggage transfers work. An attractive multi-island sequence is not a published timetable. Keep a margin before your homebound flight and price that extra night honestly when comparing a single-island stay with a more ambitious itinerary.

Ask activity-specific questions

For walking or volcanic-landscape visits, request the named trail, guide arrangements, elevation changes and weather alternative. For time at the coast, check local swimming advice instead of assuming every beach is suitable. Verify entry requirements under the country’s Cabo Verde or Cape Verde naming variants through official channels.
